FPGA Engineer Video / Imaging Systems (with Image & Color Science Exposure)

Type: Contract (6 Months)
Location: Rhodes Greece or Dublin Ireland
Work Arrangement: On-Site

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled FPGA Engineer – Video / Imaging Systems to lead the design and implementation of end-to-end commercial solutions. In this role, you will be responsible for FPGA-based system architecture, development, and integration into high-performance products. The ideal candidate will have solid expertise in electronics design and a strong background in FPGA toolchains, with added bonus points for image quality, HDMI, and colorimetry or spectroscopy knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

  1. FPGA Design & Development
    • Architect and implement FPGA-based solutions for high-speed data processing, video/image processing, or control systems.
    • Develop system-level and module-level designs, ensuring performance, resource usage, and reliability.
    • Write RTL code (VHDL/Verilog/SystemVerilog) for FPGAs, plus testbenches for thorough verification.
  2. System Integration
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (hardware, software, mechanical engineers) to integrate FPGA solutions into broader product platforms.
    • Evaluate hardware interfaces, define pinouts and interconnects, and ensure seamless communication between components.
  3. Hardware Validation & Debug
    • Conduct debugging, validation, and bring-up of FPGA hardware in collaboration with lab and testing teams.
    • Utilize oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other diagnostic tools to identify issues and confirm design integrity.
  4. Documentation & Compliance
    • Create and maintain detailed documentation on design specifications, test procedures, and performance metrics.
    • Adhere to relevant standards and regulations, ensuring compliance with applicable safety, EMC, and environmental guidelines.
  5. Research & Optimization
    • Stay abreast of the latest FPGA technologies, toolchains, and best practices in digital design.
    • Continuously optimize designs for power consumption, latency, and overall performance.
  6. Bonus Knowledge Areas (Not mandatory, but highly desirable)
    • Image Quality & Processing: Familiarity with image pipelines, video scaling, and color space conversions.
    • HDMI Protocol: Experience with HDMI implementation, including EDID handling and HDCP.
    • Colorimetry & Spectroscopy: Understanding of color science, measurements, and calibrations to ensure accurate color reproduction.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience:
    • 5+ years of hands-on experience in FPGA design and development.
    • Proficiency in VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog.
    • Experience with FPGA toolchains (e.g., Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus, Lattice Diamond, etc.).
    • Previous work in high-speed or real-time applications.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Strong understanding of digital design fundamentals (timing, clock domains, FIFOs, etc.).
    • Hands-on lab experience with hardware debugging tools (logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, etc.).
    • Familiarity with schematic design tools (OrCAD, Altium, KiCad, etc.).
    • Proficient in revision control systems (Git or SVN) and documentation practices.
    • Perform simulation, constraints definition, static timing analysis, clock-domain crossing checks, and timing closure.
  • Bonus Skills:
    • Knowledge of video/image processing algorithms.
    • Experience with colorimetry, color management systems, or LED calibration.
    • Understanding of HDMI protocol and relevant video standards (HDCP, EDID, etc.).
    • Exposure to spectroscopy or optical measurement systems for product calibration.

Soft Skills

  • Collaboration: Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills to diagnose complex hardware or system-level issues.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to learn and adapt to evolving technologies and project requirements.
